Property & preparation
Exterior colour & consent
Before a colour becomes a purchase, establish what it will cover and which controls apply. A clear exterior proposal connects the surface, its condition, the preparation and the intended finish.

Start with the address, not the postcode district
Knightsbridge work can fall within RBKC or Westminster. Use the full address to find the relevant council, conservation map and listed-building record. Then check that council’s Article 4 register and any direction applying to the property. These directions restrict specified operations; the presence of a conservation area does not by itself answer every question about a repaint.

Describe the material beneath the colour
A cream surface is not necessarily stucco. The listed terrace at 1–9 Ennismore Gardens is faced in Portland stone. Record whether each wall, porch and surround is stone, render, brick or timber, and whether it has an established coating. Where that information is uncertain, make identification part of the preliminary assessment rather than allowing the chosen colour to determine the treatment.
Read the local colour guidance carefully
The Hans Town statement favours matching the host building or terrace, with white or cream stucco, predominantly white windows and generally black ironwork. Westminster’s stucco guide likewise emphasises a unified group colour and discourages picking out mouldings in contrasting shades. These are conservation principles, not a pre-approved paint chart for every property. Compare a proposed finish with the relevant group and obtain any required written decision.

Include the front door and railings
List the door, frame, fanlight and metalwork as individual components, with photographs and the proposed sheen. Westminster’s historic stucco guidance asks door and window frames to follow the prevailing scheme and identifies black as the usual treatment for boundary railings. Ask whether an existing consent or building agreement sets a more specific requirement. A door colour should be resolved with its surround, rather than treated as an unrelated accessory.
Check both the change and the preparation
RBKC and Westminster require listed-building consent for work affecting the building’s protected character or special interest, including relevant internal work. Historic England also explains that stripping can remove evidence held in old finishes and that lime render or stucco may need permeable coatings. Describe the removal method and repair scope when seeking advice, as well as the final colour. Where specialist conservation work is needed, resolve that before decoration proceeds.

Keep one agreed record for the work
Bring the surface schedule, samples, repair decisions and council advice into a single pack. Name the person able to approve any change and record what should happen if preparation exposes unexpected material. Retain the final product and colour references with that pack after completion. It will give a future owner or contractor a useful account of what was actually specified.
